Tarneeb est un jeu de cartes joué par deux équipes, chacune composée de deux joueurs assis en face. À l'aide d'un deck standard à 52 cartes, le jeu se déroule dans le sens antihoraire. Chaque joueur offre sur le nombre de "Allmat" (Tricks) que leur équipe s'attend à gagner dans un tour.
Le joueur qui remporte l'offre déclare le "Tarneeb" (costume Trump) et initie une série de papiers de rejet. Les autres joueurs doivent éliminer les papiers du même type. Le joueur qui a réussi à associer le type de papier remporte le tour. Cependant, les papiers Tarneeb sont supérieurs aux autres types de papier; Seul un papier Tarneeb plus fort peut battre un papier Tarneeb. Le tour conclut lorsque tous les joueurs ont jeté.
Les points sont comptabilisés en fonction de l'appel d'offres et de la prise de trucs. Une équipe qui réussit ou dépasse son offre ajoute le nombre de "Allmat" gagnés à leur score. Le fait de ne pas respecter les résultats de l'offre dans la déduction de points, l'équipe adverse gagnant des points égale au nombre de "allmat" qu'ils ont capturés. Si une équipe réalise 13 "Allmat" sans enchérir pour 13, elle gagne 16 points. Enchérir avec succès pour et atteindre 13 "Allmat" attribue 26 points. Inversement, le fait de ne pas obtenir une offre de 13 se traduit par une déduction de 16 points.
Le match se termine lorsqu'une équipe atteint un score total de 41 points ou plus, les déclarant le vainqueur.
