The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special
This is it, folks! My final retro game eShop list, primarily due to dwindling retro console selections with substantial game libraries. I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural foray into the console market exceeded all expectations, resulting in a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. These titles, once a challenge to Nintendo, are now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa deserves more recognition than it received, though it wasn't entirely overlooked. A successful 2.5D platformer, it features a floppy-eared cat-creature navigating the dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. The PlayStation 2 sequel, while not as strong, is included in this essential bundle.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest triumph and propelling the PlayStation to the top. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers the classic experience, even with its dated polygons. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries became more eccentric, this debut remains a standout, less philosophical and more reminiscent of an action-packed adventure. Its engaging gameplay is a major draw. Plus, the PlayStation 2 sequels are available on the Switch for continued adventures.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
Let's delve into some lesser-known gems. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygons haven't aged perfectly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, enjoyable enemy capture mechanic, and creative bosses deliver a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
To avoid an all-Square Enix list, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while unable to fully eclipse the legacy of Chrono Trigger, stands on its own as a clever, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast. It also boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever. (Don't @ me.)
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I love most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. For non-fans, I confidently recommend Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 feels particularly polished compared to its predecessors. It's a brief period of balance before the series veered off-course. Grab the Legacy Collections and decide for yourself!
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Many PlayStation first-party titles weren't actually owned by Sony. Tomba! is a captivating platformer blending adventure game elements with precise action. Remember, its creator also made Ghosts ‘n Goblins. The initial ease is deceptive; it will challenge you. A hidden gem.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn game, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, created by many Lunar developers, shares its spirit. In contrast to the prevalent Evangelion influence, Grandia offered a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system. The collection's second game is also excellent.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation legacy includes five adventures. Quality varied, but the original stands out with its emphasis on tomb raiding over action. This collection lets you judge for yourself.
moon ($18.99)
Concluding with a deeper cut, moon, originally Japan-only, deconstructs the typical RPG. More of an adventure game, it's arguably "punk" in its approach. While not consistently fun, its unique message makes it worthwhile.
