Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Larian Says Its 'Full Attention' Is on Its Next Game, 'Media Blackout' for the Foreseeable

Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has declared a media blackout, indicating a period of silence regarding future developments.

While Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 is anticipated later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a subsequent statement to VideoGamer that the team's full attention is dedicated to their new title. Vincke's tweet expressed nostalgia for the journey with Baldur's Gate 3 but hinted at exciting future endeavors.

The upcoming game is confirmed to be neither a Baldur's Gate sequel nor another D&D adaptation. Instead, it represents a completely original creation, a departure Larian chose after internal discussions deemed a Baldur's Gate follow-up less compelling.

Previous statements from Vincke offer limited clues. In November 2023, he alluded to the new project as boundary-pushing and exciting. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized the need for a creative refresh after the intensive development of Baldur's Gate 3.

Speculation abounds regarding the nature of Larian's next venture. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, a shift to science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a different genre entirely, remains a possibility. However, significant time – potentially years – may pass before any concrete details are revealed.
