Steam Player Count Soars Post-Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has concluded its remarkable journey with the launch of Patch 8, the last major update for the RPG. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, this patch marks the end of significant updates for the game. Following the release, BG3 experienced a significant boost in its player base, moving from around 60,000 concurrent players to an impressive over 169,000, just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared his excitement on Twitter (X) on April 22 about the sudden increase in players after Patch 8's release. He highlighted the thriving mod support as a key factor, allowing the studio to shift focus towards their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.

As a result, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate series without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated. It introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and numerous other enhancements. The developers provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website. Compared to the November 2024 announcement, the final patch notes include an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished end to BG3's development.

Larian Studios has gone all out to enhance BG3, as seen in the comprehensive updates and fixes included in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
