The Batman 2 Script Finally Complete as Matt Reeves Shares Long-Awaited Image Update

Director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have completed their script for The Batman Part 2.

The long-awaited update on the Robert Pattinson-starring, years-in-development The Batman sequel arrived via a new image shared by Reeves on X/Twitter. At first glance, the post appears to be a straightforward black-and-white photo of the director seated beside Tomlin. However, the DC duo is only part of the tease; the real news lies in what looks like a script featuring a familiar bat-shaped logo resting on the table before them.

While Reeves and Tomlin stop short of explicitly confirming that The Batman 2 script is finalized, Variety has verified that the draft is indeed complete. This latest update comes as no surprise, given that last week DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn told EW he expected to review a script for the Pattinson-led sequel before the month ended.

“We feel really good about it,” Gunn stated at the time. “Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question.”

The Batman introduced audiences to a grittier version of Gotham City upon its March 2022 premiere, quickly becoming a favorite among both new and veteran comic book movie fans. The film was praised by critics (we awarded a 10/10) and resonated strongly with viewers, while also performing well at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2022 Batman film grossed a global total of $772,245,583.

Given the immense hype generated by the original film, it is hardly surprising that fans have struggled with anticipation for its continuation. Even as the Max spinoff series The Penguin helped bridge the gap by exploring a side story centered on Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobb, DC has faced challenges in finding a fitting narrative follow-up to the initial movie.

“People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,” he told EW. “That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”

After experiencing some lengthy delays, The Batman Part 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. In other Caped Crusader news, we know that the upcoming DCU film The Brave and the Bold will not feature Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne but will instead introduce a completely new iteration of the character. With two major Batman films in development and numerous details still to be determined, Gunn has noted that the character is his “biggest issue in all of DC right now.”
