LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh created his iconic Sunflowers series while residing in Arles, France, a highly productive period in his artistic career. He held a deep emotional connection to the sunflower, associating it with gratitude and viewing it as a significant artistic muse. He famously wrote to a friend:
"If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."
In August 1888, he painted four versions; he revisited the motif in January 1889, producing additional versions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original resides at the National Gallery in London; one repetition is at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo; and the most iconic, due to its vibrant colors, is housed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The Van Gogh Museum, established in 1973, collaborated with LEGO to create this set, a three-dimensional tribute to the Amsterdam version (F458). The abstract LEGO pieces effectively replicate van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.

The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet include a QR code linking to a podcast exploring van Gogh's life and artistic influences. The build process is thoughtfully designed. You construct the frame first, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly realistic touch that enhances the overall experience and perceived value.

A clever detail mirrors a historical fact: Van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of the original canvas. The LEGO set cleverly replicates this with a separate strip, fastened with pins, using brown bricks to mimic wood. This subtle detail, only noticeable to the builder, adds a unique layer of satisfaction and exclusivity.

Constructing the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, reflecting the dedication van Gogh himself showed. However, the result is convincingly realistic. The wilting flowers and those depicted in profile, initially appearing random, create a cohesive whole upon completion.

The finished piece is ideally suited for wall display. Its enduring appeal ensures continued enjoyment long after completion. This is a superb LEGO set, highly recommended for its design, build process, and the artistic tribute it represents.
LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, retails for $199.99 and contains 2615 pieces. It's available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
