Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs Continues

Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

In a December 13th press release announcing new entries in the Onimusha and Okami franchises, Capcom confirmed its commitment to reviving dormant IPs and delivering high-quality experiences to players.

The next Onimusha game, set in Edo-era Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A new Okami sequel is also in the works, though its release date remains unannounced. Excitingly, the original Okami development team is involved in this new project.

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom explicitly stated its intention to “re-activate dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” aiming to “further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content…to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”

Alongside these revivals, Capcom is also developing Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both expected in 2025. This commitment to reviving classic IPs doesn't overshadow Capcom's continued work on new titles, as evidenced by recent releases like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.

Clues from Capcom's "Super Elections"

Capcom's Past IP Revivals Will Continue

Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections," where fans voted for their most desired sequels and remakes, offer intriguing hints about future projects. The results revealed strong support for Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.

Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers haven't seen new installments since 1997 and 2003, respectively. While Breath of Fire 6, an online RPG, launched in 2016, it closed in 2017. These long-dormant franchises are ripe for a potential revival, whether through remasters or sequels.

Although Capcom remains discreet about its future plans, the "Super Elections" provide valuable insight into fan preferences, and the high demand for Onimusha and Okami further supports their decision to prioritize these revivals. The results suggest other beloved series may soon follow suit.
