Civilization 7 VR Will Be a Meta Quest 3 Exclusive, Hopefully with Better UI Than On Steam

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will be exclusively available on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, 2K Games and Firaxis Games revealed that Civilization 7 VR marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming.

Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K's website, saying, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!

Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his confidence in Civ 7 VR, stating, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.

It's worth noting that while Civ 7 is available on PlayStation consoles, Civ 7 VR will not be released on PSVR2.

Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR immerses players in a Command Table, allowing them to strategize and navigate the world as if they were playing a tabletop game come to life. Players can zoom in to appreciate the detailed buildings and units or view the world from above.

The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In VR, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a personalized vista for their leader, while in MR, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment.

Civ 7 VR offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, supporting up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can engage with AI-controlled opponents or compete against human players. Multiplayer requires a 2K Account and a Meta Account, allowing players to see their friends and opponents across the Command Table as their chosen world leaders.

Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback

Firaxis Games has actively responded to feedback received during Civ 7’s early access period. Announced via the official Civ 7 Twitter (X) page, the team is addressing issues raised by players, especially concerning the User Interface. Civ 7’s Advanced Access, available to those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder’s Edition, began on February 6, 2025. The game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with fans highlighting UI challenges.

To address these concerns, Firaxis Games has promised several updates and improvements. Their priorities include enhancing UI interactions, improving map readability, and refining formatting. Additionally, they plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a variety of new map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crises adjustments, and additional bug fixes.

Civilization 7 VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though no specific date has been announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
