Daredevil: Born Again Star Vincent D'Onofrio Reveals Wilson Fisk Can Never Be In a Movie: 'It's All Caught Up In Rights'
It seems that fans of the Marvel universe, particularly those who have followed the gripping portrayal of Wilson Fisk by Vincent D’Onofrio in "Daredevil," might be disappointed with recent news. D’Onofrio, who has brought the complex character of Fisk, also known as Kingpin, to life with remarkable depth, shared some disheartening information during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz.
According to D’Onofrio, due to complex ownership rights, his character is restricted to television appearances only. "The only thing I know is not positive," he stated, emphasizing the challenges Marvel faces in using his character outside of TV shows. "It's a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character. It's a very hard thing to do, because of ownership and stuff."
This revelation means that fans won't see D’Onofrio's Wilson Fisk in any Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, including highly anticipated films like "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "Avengers: Doomsday." This limitation might also impact the potential for a standalone "Daredevil" movie featuring Charlie Cox, where D’Onofrio's presence as the formidable villain would be expected.
D’Onofrio's journey with Fisk began in the 2015 Netflix series "Daredevil," where he played the powerful crimelord and future mayor of New York City. His performance across the show's three seasons, which concluded in 2018, has been widely acclaimed. In discussing his approach to the role, D’Onofrio told IGN about the influences he draws upon, particularly the humility seen in action scenes from actors like Harrison Ford and Gary Cooper. "Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous," he explained, highlighting how these elements add realism and depth to his portrayal of Fisk.
Currently, fans can catch D’Onofrio's continued performance in "Daredevil: Born Again," which is airing weekly on Disney+ and is set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025. While his screen time may be limited to the small screen, D’Onofrio's dedication to the role ensures that Wilson Fisk remains a compelling and influential figure in the Marvel universe.
