The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered's Spectral Horse Discovery Sparks Community-Wide Ghost Hunt to Find Out What Caused 'Spookmane' to Come Into Existence
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, filled with eerie elements like skeletons, spirits, and zombies, has recently sparked intrigue among its community due to a mysterious 'ghost horse' that no one recalls from the original 2006 game or the 2025 remaster. The saga began when Reddit user TaricIsNotASupport posted about their discovery of what appears to be a spectral horse waiting to be found.
Uhhhh, guys, is this new?

TaricIsNotASupport shared their experience, saying, "So I was crafting stupid spells in Frostcrag Spire, as it’s possibly my favourite way to have fun in this game, however this time when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire that has divided this community so very much I noticed something suuuuuuper strange in the distance. I did as any of us of the right mind would do and B-lined it over there like a maniac. To my amazement was this spectral horse with no name. I have played thousands of hours of the original Oblivion — and have already sunken over a hundred hours into the Remaster — yet this is the first I have ever seen this horse. I don’t know if it’s something new that’s been added, or if I’ve just missed out on it before and never knew."
This discovery prompted a community-wide search, with players combing through the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages website for any mention of a spectral mount in the original game, but so far, nothing has been found.
To the people asking if I can ride or interact with the spooky horse, yes! 1/2

TaricIsNotASupport clarified that they are playing on a PlayStation 5, where mods are not available, and even shared a video clip of their character riding the ghostly steed. Despite its ethereal appearance, the horse functions like any other in the game, capable of fast travel and stabling. "By all accounts it’s now my steed!" TaricIsNotASupport exclaimed.
Speculation abounds, with some suggesting the ghost horse could be a glitch, perhaps the result of a spell gone awry. Bethesda games are notorious for their bugs, and this could be yet another example. As ClaymoreBeatz noted, "Very weird, the wiki says there's only 2 unique horses, Shadowmere and unicorns. And there's no horse mods that I can see that do this so I highly doubt your [sic] lying about not being on PC, this is probably some sort of glitch that the new Remastered has or glitched magical effect. Armored horses names change to Armored horse I think so maybe it's an Armored horse that got hit by a spell and now its name and spell effect is glitched."
I was asked if Spookmane* can be buffed and if it stays spectral; the answer is yes!

Others entertain the possibility that the developers at Bethesda and Virtuos may have hidden the ghost horse in the game as a secret for players to uncover in Oblivion Remastered. While this theory seems less likely, it's an exciting prospect that hints at other potential secrets within the remaster.
The community is eager to replicate TaricIsNotASupport's discovery, but no specific method has been identified yet. In the absence of an official name, TaricIsNotASupport has affectionately dubbed their spectral companion 'Spookmane.' They've vowed to continue their adventure with Spookmane by their side, whether it's a unique occurrence, a hidden feature, or a glitch. "This creature might be my favourite new friend I’ve made," TaricIsNotASupport said. "Spookmane, you’re glorious and I love you."
Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts numerous enhancements. It supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, and includes significant updates to leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additional dialogue, an improved third-person view, and new lip sync technology have also been well-received by fans, with some considering the remaster to be more akin to a full remake. Bethesda has provided reasons for opting for a remaster over a complete rebuild.
As players dive into the remastered world, advice is circulating to tackle Kvatch early before the level scaling turns it into a daunting challenge. There are also reports of adventurous players venturing beyond Cyrodiil into Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, the latter rumored to be the setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
