Fallout Developers Express Interest in a New Game, But With a Condition

Several Fallout developers, including Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have voiced their enthusiasm for developing a new entry in the series. However, their participation hinges on a crucial factor: creative freedom.

The Need for Novelty

In a recent YouTube Q&A, Sawyer stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, but only if he's given sufficient creative leeway. He emphasized the importance of avoiding restrictive constraints that would stifle his vision. "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries?'" he explained. "What am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?" He further clarified that overly restrictive limitations would render the project unappealing.

This sentiment is echoed by other developers. Last year, Fallout co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster, but, like Sawyer, stressed the necessity of innovative elements. Cain highlighted that his involvement in any new Fallout game would depend entirely on whether it offered a fresh, unexplored direction. He emphasized the need for something genuinely new and different to pique his interest.

Obsidian's Perspective

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart also shared his desire to work on another Fallout game, should the opportunity arise. However, as of January 2023, he confirmed that no such project was underway, citing Obsidian's busy schedule with Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. While Urquhart expressed a strong personal interest in returning to the Fallout universe before retirement, he acknowledged that the timing remains uncertain.
