A recent report from Niko Partners, a video game market research firm, suggests Square Enix and Tencent are collaborating on a mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV. This article explores the details of this potentially significant joint venture.

FFXIV Mobile Game: Mostly Speculation

Niko Partners' report highlights 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. Among them, a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent, is listed. This aligns with previous, unconfirmed reports of Tencent's involvement in such a project. Neither Square Enix nor Tencent has officially confirmed the development.

According to Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, the mobile FFXIV title is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasizes that this information is based largely on industry rumors and lacks official confirmation.

Square Enix's Multiplatform Push

Tencent's prominent role in the mobile gaming market makes this rumored partnership a logical step for Square Enix. This collaboration appears to reflect Square Enix's stated May commitment to a more aggressive multiplatform strategy for key titles like Final Fantasy. The potential FFXIV mobile game could be a key element of this broader strategy.
