Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin

Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision to remove the style, making it once again accessible to players.

The return of the Master Chief skin, initially a popular addition in 2020, had been highly anticipated by the Fortnite community. However, the December 23rd announcement of the Matte Black style's unavailability sparked considerable controversy. This was particularly upsetting given prior assurances that the style would remain unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players after purchase. Epic Games subsequently corrected this, confirming players can still obtain the Matte Black style as originally promised.

This reversal follows a recent FTC ruling awarding $72 million in refunds to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" employed by Epic Games. The community's dissatisfaction stemmed from the impact on both new and existing Master Chief skin owners. Even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the Matte Black style.

The Master Chief skin's return isn't the only recent point of contention. The reintroduction of the Renegade Raider skin also generated controversy, with some veteran players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are advocating for an "OG" style for original Master Chief skin purchasers, though Epic Games' response to this request remains uncertain. While the Matte Black style issue has been resolved, the debate surrounding skin exclusivity continues.
