When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you're given the chance to adopt a cat or dog to keep you company on your farm. Initially, the game limited players to just one pet per save file. However, the 1.6 update changed the game, allowing you to adopt multiple furry friends. To unlock this feature, you'll need to meet some specific requirements.

First, you must maximize your friendship level with your initial pet. This involves providing them with a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can—except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills itself naturally.

Additionally, you need to pet them daily, which you'll know you've done when a heart bubble appears over their head. You can monitor your pet’s friendship level through the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.

Once their friendship meter reaches its peak, Marnie will send you a notice in the mail, inviting you to adopt additional pets from her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, you'll receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, your next step is to visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern area of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each of them. These bowls serve not only as a water source but also as their "home," ensuring that your friendship meter with your pets remains intact. Neglecting to refill the bowl can cause your pets to run away, resulting in a loss of companionship and investment.

Pet Bowls are available under the "Construct Farm Buildings" section of Robin's menu and cost 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood, which you can gather using a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to build these bowls before adopting your new pets to prevent any loss of friendship points.
