by Lucas Apr 21,2025

Exciting news for fans of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam: a live-action film adaptation is now in full production, thanks to a co-financing agreement between Bandai Namco and Legendary. Announced back in 2018, the project had been quiet until recently when Legendary and the newly formed Bandai Namco Filmworks America shared updates, signaling that the long-awaited first live-action Gundam film is on its way to the big screen.

The film, which has yet to receive an official title, will be penned and helmed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on Sweet Tooth. It is slated for a global theatrical release. While specific release windows and plot details remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been released to build anticipation among fans.

This upcoming film marks the first live-action venture for a franchise that boasts an impressive legacy, including 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line. Together, these elements generate over $900 million annually.

"We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized," stated Legendary and Bandai Namco. They further emphasized the significance of Mobile Suit Gundam, which debuted in 1979. The series pioneered the 'real robot anime' genre, moving away from the traditional narratives of clear-cut good versus evil. Instead, it offered realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific explorations, and complex human stories, treating robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits.' This approach sparked a massive cultural phenomenon.
