Too Hot to Handle: Gaming Mouse Allegedly Burst Into Flame and Almost “Burned Down” User's Apartment
A redditor's gaming mouse spontaneously combusted, nearly causing a house fire. The user, u/lommelinn, reported waking to the smell of smoke and discovering their Gigabyte M6880X mouse engulfed in flames. The incident occurred while their PC was in sleep mode.
The resulting fire, though quickly extinguished, caused significant damage to the user's room, including their modular synthesizer and desk. Images show the mouse's top rear panel completely melted, while the underside remained relatively intact. The cause of the localized damage remains a mystery.

Gigabyte responded to the incident on Reddit, stating they are investigating the matter and have contacted the user to offer support. The user, equally surprised, confirmed their PC was in sleep mode and that the USB port showed no voltage irregularities. The incident raises concerns about the potential for unexpected failures in seemingly innocuous devices. The lack of a battery and the low power draw of the USB 2.0 connection make the event particularly unusual.
