Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a playable Baldur's Gate 4.

A Playable Baldur's Gate 4 Was Abandoned

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a Baldur's Gate 3 sequel, already in a playable state, was abandoned. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke explained that the team, after extensive work on D&D titles, felt the need to pursue original concepts. The prospect of potentially years more development on a similar project proved unappealing.

The decision, according to Vincke, significantly boosted team morale. The studio is now focused on two unannounced projects, described as their most ambitious yet. A planned Baldur's Gate 3 DLC was also abandoned for similar reasons.

Future Projects and the Divinity Series

Larian's future likely involves a new entry in the Divinity series. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 was previously hinted at, Vincke confirmed the next Divinity game will be unexpected. The studio is currently working on the final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3, slated for Fall 2024, which will include mod support, cross-play, and new endings.

This shift signifies a strategic move by Larian Studios to prioritize fresh creative endeavors over continuing the Baldur's Gate franchise, at least for the foreseeable future.
