In the world of superhero cinema, every hero needs a formidable villain, and for *Captain America: Brave New World*, fans were introduced to The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. The character's transformation into a visibly mutated figure was achieved through practical effects and makeup, though the final design deviated from the comic book source. Blue Whale Studios, the Atlanta-based special effects company behind the character's look in the MCU film, recently shared insights into their original design concept for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which more closely mirrored the comics.

The initial design envisioned by Blue Whale Studios aimed for a sickly appearance, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin. This concept was revealed on their Instagram, showcasing a straightforward design without the intricate mutation details seen in the final film. Additionally, the studio posted a video of the prosthetics application process on Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse into the character's creation.

"We were originally brought on to design and apply the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in *Captain America: Brave New World*," Blue Whale Studios explained. "As often happens in film, the story evolved, and during reshoots, the creative direction shifted. Our version was ultimately not used in the final cut. Still, we remain incredibly proud of the work we created."

The studio drew inspiration from the original comic book art to craft a look that was both grounded and iconic, striving for a refined, natural realism while staying true to the source material. They highlighted the technical achievement of creating lightweight and comfortable makeup for the actor, a testament to their team's dedication.

This original design closely resembles The Leader's first appearance in the Marvel comics, specifically in 1964's *Tales to Astonish #62*. However, the character's final look in *Brave New World* also connects to more recent comic iterations, notably from 2018's *Immortal Hulk*.

The Leader's journey to villainy was first hinted at in 2008's *The Incredible Hulk*, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-infused blood. Initially a normal human, this exposure set the stage for his transformation seen in *Brave New World*.

Last May, reports surfaced that *Captain America: Brave New World* underwent reshoots to introduce Giancarlo Esposito's new villainous character, Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society. Esposito, known for roles in *Breaking Bad*, *Star Wars*, and *The Boys*, adds another layer of intrigue to the film.

In the lead-up to the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed his role was cut following extensive rewrites and reshoots, reflecting the dynamic nature of film production.
