Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy Reportedly Retiring at the End of 2025

by Leo Mar 28,2025

According to reports from Puck News, Kathleen Kennedy, the esteemed president of Lucasfilm, is considering stepping down by the end of 2025, aligning with the conclusion of her current contract. Initially, Kennedy had contemplated retirement in 2024 but chose to delay her decision. While Variety has cited a source close to Kennedy dismissing Puck’s report as "pure speculation," The Hollywood Reporter has corroborated the story from Puck.

Kennedy assumed her role at Lucasfilm in 2012, initially serving as co-chair alongside George Lucas, who personally selected her. Following Lucas's departure, she ascended to the position of president and has since steered the Star Wars franchise through a transformative period.

Under her leadership, Lucasfilm has released a new sequel trilogy, consisting of Star Wars Episodes 7-9, and has spearheaded the franchise's venture into streaming with successful series such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Key, among others. While films like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" have been commercial successes, others, such as "Solo: A Star Wars Story," have faced financial challenges at the box office.

Though not yet confirmed, Kennedy's potential exit raises questions about the future of several announced and rumored projects, including new films by directors James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover, as well as an untitled Rey movie that has yet to come to fruition.

The next wave of Star Wars projects on the horizon includes "The Mandalorian & Grogu," and a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg.

Before joining Lucasfilm, Kennedy co-founded Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Her illustrious career includes producing iconic films such as E.T., Jurassic Park, and Back to the Future, earning her eight Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.
