"Magic: The Gathering Universe Goes Cinematic"

by Carter Apr 06,2025

Hasbro has exciting news for fans of Magic: The Gathering—they're bringing the beloved card game to screens everywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is teaming up with Legendary Entertainment to craft a shared Magic: The Gathering universe that will span both movies and TV shows, with the movie taking the lead.

Legendary’s chairman of worldwide production expressed their commitment, stating, “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering.” Legendary Entertainment, known for blockbuster hits like Dune and the modern Godzilla films such as Godzilla vs Kong, as well as Detective Pikachu, is set to bring this iconic game to life on the big screen.

While details are still emerging, it appears that the movie and TV projects at Legendary might not be connected to the previously announced Magic: The Gathering animated series on Netflix. However, there's a possibility that plans have evolved, and the animated series could now be integrated into this expansive shared universe.

Magic: The Gathering was originally created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 and has since become one of the world's most popular trading card games. Wizards of the Coast joined the Hasbro family in 1999.

Hasbro is no newcomer to transforming its products into cinematic experiences, with a portfolio that includes adaptations like G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons and Dragons. The company is currently developing several projects, including new G.I. Joe films, a Power Rangers movie, and a Beyblade film.
