Mario Kart's Secret Character Screen Nintendo Easter Egg

by Bella Apr 04,2026

Nintendo has integrated a famous recurring Easter egg into its new Mario Kart World, the launch title for Nintendo Switch 2, as fans have uncovered.

Totaka's Song, a recurring theme secretly hidden in many Nintendo titles, has surfaced once again—this time in Mario Kart World’s character selection screen.

Just navigate to Yoshi on the roster and let the green dinosaur dance for a while. Soon enough, Yoshi begins humming a recognizable tune—that's Totaka's Song.

"I was idle on the Character Select screen when I noticed Mario humming after some time," shared Reddit user charizardtelephone. "I thought, 'They could easily hide little musical secrets like that.' Hidden music? In a Nintendo game? With Yoshi? It almost felt too perfect."

Esteemed Japanese composer Kazumi Totaka has woven his signature tune into numerous titles where he contributed, both as composer and as Yoshi’s voice actor. From Super Smash Bros. and Wii Sports to Animal Crossing and Pikmin, Totaka’s Song is subtly present in them all.

"After a few moments, sure enough, Yoshi started humming Totaka's Song, just like the idle Yoshis in Mario Kart 8," charizardtelephone explained, recounting the discovery in Mario Kart World. "It’s a really neat Easter egg. I'm not sure if many have picked up on it yet."

In Japan, Mario Kart World is already outselling the physical copies of the Switch 1 launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Bundled with the new Switch console, the game is Nintendo's first major hit on its latest system. Next on the release schedule is Donkey Kong Bananza, which will be showcased further in a Nintendo Direct presentation later this week.
