NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans

NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing mods. The company explicitly stated that any modification of the game, regardless of whether it's cosmetic or provides gameplay advantages, violates the game's terms of service and risks a permanent ban.

This announcement follows the launch of Season 1, which introduced new playable characters (Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four) and adjustments to existing heroes. Despite attempts in Season 1 to prevent modding through asset hash checks, workarounds have emerged. One such mod, available on Nexus Mods, bypasses these checks, allowing for modifications ranging from cosmetic changes to significant gameplay alterations. The mod's creator, Prafit, clearly stated that users assume all risks, including potential account bans. Another mod, created by Ercuallo and shared on social media, even transforms Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy.

While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company's position remains firm: modifying Marvel Rivals is unacceptable. Although some mods have been removed from platforms like Nexus Mods, Prafit's workaround remains available, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating modding.

The situation underscores the inherent risk associated with modifying online games. NetEase Games' response to the prevalence of these workarounds remains to be seen, but the message is clear: players should adhere to the terms of service to avoid potential account penalties. Marvel Rivals, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the upcoming DICE Awards 2025, continues to enjoy considerable success, and maintaining a fair and balanced gameplay experience is crucial for its continued growth.
