Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation
Simu Liu, the star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is attempting to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu responded to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he’s actively working with rights holders to bring the game to the big screen.
The Sleeping Dogs film adaptation, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, was seemingly abandoned a year later. Yen recently confirmed the project's cancellation, citing years of work and investment, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. His statement left fans disheartened, believing the Hong Kong-set action franchise was dead.
However, Liu’s recent social media interaction has reignited hope. The success of his involvement remains uncertain, but his efforts represent a surprising turn of events for the long-dormant project.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows undercover detective Wei Shen as he navigates the treacherous world of Hong Kong's Triad gangs. Critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 from IGN, the game surprisingly never received a sequel.
