Marvel's Cap Soars Above $300M at Box Office

Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is raising concerns. While the film has grossed approximately $289.4 million globally, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend threatens its profitability.

According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a global box office gross of around $425 million to break even. The initial strong opening weekend, exceeding expectations with a $100 million domestic haul, has been followed by a considerably weaker second weekend, earning only $28.2 million domestically. This steep decline mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.

While the film currently boasts $141.2 million in domestic and $148.2 million in international revenue, Comscore data indicates a worldwide gross of $63.5 million during its second weekend. Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 so far, the substantial drop has surprised industry analysts. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore noted to Variety that this significant decline reflects lower audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films, suggesting a "new normal" for the franchise. Deadline projects a final global box office gross of approximately $450 million.

The film's launch coincided with largely unfavorable reviews. IGN's review, awarding a 5/10, criticized the film for failing to live up to its title, despite strong performances from the cast.

Marvel Studios and Disney are hoping for a significant box office rebound to reverse the recent trend of underperforming MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine), and build momentum for upcoming releases such as Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
