Minecraft 2? Notch Hints at a Spiritual Successor

Markus "Notch" Persson, Minecraft's original creator, has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at the possibility of a Minecraft sequel. His recent X (formerly Twitter) poll suggests a new game is in the works, potentially a spiritual successor to his iconic creation.

Notch's poll presented two options: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a "spiritual successor to Minecraft." The latter overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of nearly 300,000 votes. This strong response clearly indicates significant fan interest in a new game from Notch that captures the essence of Minecraft.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, stating he had "basically announced Minecraft 2." He acknowledged the potential risks of creating a spiritual successor, noting that such projects don't always meet expectations. However, the enthusiastic fan response and the potential financial rewards have motivated him to pursue this path.

It's crucial to remember that Notch sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) and the Minecraft IP to Microsoft in 2014. This means he can't directly create a true Minecraft 2 without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that any new project will respect Mojang's work and avoid any IP infringement.

While fans eagerly await Notch's potential new game, they can also look forward to other Minecraft-related projects. These include planned Minecraft-themed amusement parks in the UK and US (opening in 2026 and 2027) and the upcoming live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
