Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story
Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.
The creative minds behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the most humorous scenes in the film drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In a standout moment, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation, needing to hitch a ride on Jason Momoa's Garrett due to a shortage of Elytra wings, which were only available for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry. This scene, filled with physical comedy, showcases Steve scrambling to stay atop Garrett to avoid a perilous fall. However, this sequence was more than just a comedic endeavor.
"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story, aiming for something majestic and beautiful that quickly turns chaotic," explained A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess."It was hilarious between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "With Jack perched on top of Jason in this intricate rig, Jack started singing The NeverEnding Story and playfully riding Jason as if he were Falkor."
This scene holds a special nod to fans, as Jack Black previously portrayed Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, this sequence was not only fun but also a chance to contribute creatively.
"I helped write that part, and Jack was eager to join in," Momoa said with a laugh. "Inspired by Top Gun: Maverick, I wanted to simulate a thrilling maneuver where I could hit the brakes and watch Jack slide off. We brainstormed this at the hotel, and it was so funny that it made it into the film, turning out to be phenomenal."
Jack Black mentioned, "I'm not sure if the most daring version made the final cut because we had several takes, but it could have easily been rated R. Ultimately, we opted for a family-friendly version!"

Momoa humorously reenacted the dynamic between him and Jack on set (you can see this in the video!).
"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa quipped. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
