"Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition Backlash Erupts Over Early Release"
Warner Bros. Games has recently unveiled and released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, touted as "the most extensive version" of the beloved fighting game. However, this release has stirred significant unease among fans, who fear that NetherRealm Studios may have shifted its focus away from Mortal Kombat 1, signaling the end of new downloadable content (DLC) characters and major updates.
Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition bundles the main game with all previously released DLC, including the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 1, and Kombat Pack 2. It also introduces new character skins inspired by the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan, along with a skin from the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie for Sub-Zero and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.
For many fans, the launch of the Definitive Edition feels like a definitive end to Mortal Kombat 1's lifecycle. While Warner Bros. is known for releasing definitive and ultimate editions of its games, this particular release carries a sense of finality. With no announcements about a Kombat Pack 3 or other significant content, fans speculate that the T-1000 guest character, released in March 2025, might be the last addition to the game.
This development is a major disappointment for dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 fans, who had hoped for extended support. A September 2024 tweet from NetherRealm's development chief, Ed Boon, had previously reassured fans that the studio was "fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come." However, the release of the Definitive Edition seems to contradict this statement.
Frustrated fans have taken to social media to voice their concerns. One Redditor remarked, "The game is done, it’s their way of saying ‘Goodbye! Come back the next year or two for another overly priced game bloated with guest characters!’" Another pointed out, "MK1 officially has a shorter content lifespan than the f\*\*\*ing Texas Chainsaw Massacre game."

For context, NetherRealm announced in July 2021 that it had begun work on its next project (Mortal Kombat 1), signaling the end of DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11, two years and three months after its release. No similar announcement has been made for Mortal Kombat 1 yet.
Despite a brief resurgence in January with the secret fight featuring Floyd, the pink ninja teased by Ed Boon, the overall sentiment among core fans remains one of disappointment. The T-1000 Terminator was the final DLC character added as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, following other fighters like Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amid questions about the game's sales performance, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a potential Kombat Pack 3.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, continues to express confidence in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav stated that the company plans to focus on just four titles, one of which is Mortal Kombat.

While fans anticipate the release of a third game in NetherRealm's DC fighting game franchise, Injustice, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this yet. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After releasing Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, it seemed the studio would alternate between the two franchises, but instead, they released the soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of an Injustice title. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine as key factors. "We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe," Boon explained, adding that the team hoped to return to the Injustice series in the future.
When asked directly about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon reassured fans, "Not at all," indicating that the door remains open for more Injustice games.
AnswerSee ResultsMortal Kombat 1 has sold 5 million copies, contributing to the franchise's total of 100 million units sold. However, it has underperformed compared to its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, which sold over 15 million copies by 2022, surpassing Mortal Kombat X's nearly 11 million units sold worldwide.
