MultiVersus to Shut Down When Season 5 Concludes in May

by Mia Mar 05,2025

Player First Games has announced the impending closure of its platform fighter, MultiVersus, with Season 5 marking its final chapter. The game, a Warner Bros. title, will officially shut down on May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PST.

This announcement, detailed in a blog post on the studio's website, signifies the end of online support for MultiVersus. Launched on May 28, 2024, Season 5 begins February 4th, providing a final few months of gameplay. While online functionality will cease in May, Player First Games assures players that all earned and purchased content will remain accessible offline via local and training modes.

The MultiVersus team expressed gratitude for player support in a statement: “Most importantly, we want to thank every player and person who has ever played or supported MultiVersus. We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey.”

Real-money transactions are now disabled, although Gleamium and character tokens can still be used to acquire in-game items until the May 30th shutdown. The game will also be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store at that time.

MultiVersus' closure follows reports of the game's underperformance for Warner Bros. Discovery, resulting in a significant $100 million writedown, as revealed in a November financial call. This contributed to a larger $300 million writedown for the games sector, alongside the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The news also follows the recent departure of Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad.

Chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels commented on the financial impact during the November call: "We took another $100 million plus impairment due to the underperforming releases, primarily MultiVersus this quarter, bringing total writedown year-to-date to over $300 million in our games business..."

Despite the impending closure, Season 5 promises a robust send-off. Alongside standard seasonal content, new playable characters Lola Bunny and Aquaman will be introduced. Lola Bunny will be unlockable via a daily calendar reward, while Aquaman will be available through the battle pass, both launching next week.
