MultiVersus to Shut Down Post-5th Season
Warner Bros. Games Shutting Down MultiVersus
MultiVersus Season 5 Will Be Its Last Season
MultiVersus fans, it's time to brace yourselves for some bittersweet news. The game's official Twitter (now known as X) account announced on January 31, 2025, that MultiVersus will be shutting down for good on May 30, 2025, after its fifth and final season. In a heartfelt blog post on the MultiVersus website, Player First Games and Warner Bros. confirmed that "our next Season will serve as the final seasonal content update for the game."
Season 5 kicks off on February 4, 2025, and will run through May 30, 2025. This final season promises to be a thrilling one, introducing two new playable characters: DC's Aquaman and Looney Tunes' Lola Bunny. According to the blog post, "All new Season 5 content, including Aquaman and Lola Bunny, will be earnable through gameplay." Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will no longer be available for download on platforms like the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store.
Unfortunately, there have been no official statements regarding the reasons behind the decision to shut down MultiVersus.
Moving Forward With MultiVersus’ Offline Mode
After Season 5 wraps up, MultiVersus won't disappear entirely. Players will still have the option to enjoy the game offline "via the local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends." To access this offline mode, players need to download the latest version of MultiVersus during Season 5, from February 4 at 9 AM PST to May 30 at 9 AM PDT.
Once logged in, the game will automatically generate a local save file linked to your PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, or Epic Games Store account. This feature ensures that you can continue playing MultiVersus offline, keeping all the content you've earned or purchased.
As of January 31, 2025, MultiVersus has stopped accepting real money transactions. This means that Gleamium, the game's premium currency, can no longer be bought from the online store. However, players can still use any remaining Gleamium to access in-game content until the end of Season 5.
MultiVersus First Opened Public Beta In 2022
MultiVersus burst onto the scene with its public beta in July 2022, offering fans a free-to-play fighting game that drew comparisons to the beloved Super Smash Bros. series. It aimed to set itself apart with a unique 2v2 team-based format. From July 2022 to June 2023, the open public beta rolled out several updates and two seasons' worth of content. The game was relaunched in May 2024 with new features, including additional characters, rollback netcode, a new PvE mode, new currencies, and more.
Despite these efforts, the relaunch didn't meet fan expectations. Persistent technical issues, frequent disconnections, and controversial microtransactions led to dissatisfaction. Reports from July 2024 indicated a 70% drop in player count on PS4 and PS5.
MultiVersus will officially shut down on May 30 at 9 AM PDT, leaving behind a legacy of 35 playable characters from various beloved franchises. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed their gratitude, stating, "We will be forever grateful for the incredible support of the MultiVersus community throughout this journey."
You can still download MultiVersus on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC until May 30, 2025.
