Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern: A 'Jerk' in Gunn's Superman Film

by Isaac Apr 21,2025

A fresh take on the iconic Superman is on the way, courtesy of director James Gunn, and it's bringing Nathan Fillion's unique portrayal of Green Lantern to the screen. In a recent interview with TV Guide, Fillion shared insights into his character, Guy Gardner, revealing a departure from the charm typically associated with the role.

"He's a jerk!" Fillion exclaimed, emphasizing that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, just fearlessness. "So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He's not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that's the answer. That's what you do in that moment."

Fillion also highlighted Gardner's hubris, suggesting that overconfidence might be his true superpower. "I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman," he said. "He can't!"

This upcoming Superman film marks the inaugural chapter of the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, dubbed "Gods and Monsters." Alongside Fillion's Green Lantern, the film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. James Gunn, who wrote and directed the film, has set its release for July 11, 2025.

Interest in the Green Lanterns extends beyond this film. HBO is currently producing a series titled "Lanterns," focusing on other members of the superhero alliance. Kyle Chandler will portray Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart. The series is slated to premiere in 2026.

With this new take on the DC universe, fans have a lot to look forward to, including Fillion's intriguing portrayal of the unlikable yet fearless Guy Gardner.
