NieR: Automata's Death Penalty Demystified

NieR: Automata's Permadeath Mechanic: Understanding and Recovering Your Lost Equipment
NieR: Automata, despite its seemingly straightforward gameplay, incorporates unforgiving rogue-like elements. Death carries significant consequences, potentially resulting in the permanent loss of valuable items and significant setbacks, especially in the later stages of the game. However, a recovery system offers a lifeline, providing a chance to reclaim lost possessions before they vanish permanently. This guide explains the death penalty and the crucial body recovery process.
Understanding the Death Penalty
Upon death in NieR: Automata, you lose all experience points (XP) earned since your last save. More critically, you lose all currently equipped Plug-In Chips. While Plug-In Chips are replaceable, some are rare and require significant investment to acquire and upgrade. Respawning leaves your equipped Plug-In Chip slots empty, demanding re-equipping or selecting a pre-set loadout.
Crucially, these lost Plug-In Chips aren't immediately lost forever. You have one chance to retrieve them. Failure to recover your body before dying again results in the permanent loss of those chips.
Recovering Your Body: A Step-by-Step Guide
After respawning, your immediate priority is recovering your fallen body. A blue body icon appears on your map, pinpointing its location. Upon reaching the icon, interacting with it restores your lost Plug-In Chips. You then face a crucial choice:
Repair: This option forgoes the lost XP but transforms your previous body into an AI companion that will assist you until it is destroyed.
Retrieve: This option restores the lost XP earned since your last save.
Regardless of your choice, your previously equipped Plug-In Chips are restored to their original configuration, overriding your current setup. Alternatively, you can choose to simply add the recovered chips back to your inventory.
