The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise double-whammy for fans of the Ninja Gaiden franchise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."

Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins

Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the same brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay the series is known for. The collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames is a significant development, leveraging both studios' expertise in action game design.

A key element of Ninja Gaiden 4 is its new protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan. Art Director Tomoko Nishii of PlatinumGames describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic hero. However, Ryu Hayabusa remains a significant part of the story and will be playable, ensuring long-time fans are not left disappointed. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao of PlatinumGames explains that introducing a new hero makes the series more accessible to newcomers while still delivering a compelling narrative for veterans.

The combat system introduces a new "Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style" alongside Yakumo's "Raven Style," offering fresh challenges and dynamic action. Director Masazaku Hirayama of Team Ninja assures fans that while distinct from Ryu's style, the new combat feels authentic to the Ninja Gaiden experience. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase.

Release Date and Availability

Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remaster Now Available

Alongside the Ninja Gaiden 4 announcement, a remake of Ninja Gaiden 2, titled Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. This remaster features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, offering a refreshed experience for both longtime fans and newcomers.
