Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Rumors suggest a new port of the classic first-person shooter, Doom 64, is on the horizon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This follows an updated ESRB rating for the game, listing it for these platforms. This is significant, as ESRB ratings are typically submitted close to a game's release date.

The original Doom 64, a Nintendo 64 exclusive, received a remastered release for PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, featuring enhanced visuals and a new game chapter. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ESRB listing strongly suggests a current-gen console port is imminent. Past instances of ESRB ratings preceding official announcements, such as with Felix the Cat's 2023 re-release, lend credence to this speculation.

The updated rating doesn't include PC, although the 2020 version was released on Steam. Furthermore, PC players can already experience a Doom 64-like experience through existing mods for classic Doom titles. Given Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles, a similar, unannounced launch for Doom 64 remains a possibility.

Looking beyond Doom 64, the anticipated release of Doom: The Dark Ages in 2025 adds further excitement for fans. Rumors point towards a potential January 2024 announcement of a release date. By remastering its classic titles, Bethesda could effectively build anticipation for the next main installment in the franchise.
