Nintendo Switch 2 Accessories: Price Hike Sparks Fan Outrage

by Jack May 13,2025

Nintendo has officially announced the pre-order date and pricing details for the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console and its accessories. Despite the console's price remaining unchanged, the cost of accessories has seen a significant increase, sparking discussions among early adopters about their pre-order decisions.

The base model of the Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at $449.99, while the bundle that includes Mario Kart World is set at $499.99. Mario Kart World itself is available as a standalone game for $79.99, and Donkey Kong Bananza is priced at $69.99.

However, the real surprise comes with the accessory price hikes. Here's a detailed breakdown of the new prices:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - $84.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Pair - $94.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip - $39.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Strap - $13.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set - $24.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - $54.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set - $119.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector - $39.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case - $84.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter - $34.99

Nintendo's announcement on its website explains that these price adjustments are due to "changes in market conditions." Notably, a $5 increase is standard for high-ticket items like the Joy-Con 2 Pair, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the camera. The Switch 2 Dock Set saw a $10 increase, bringing its new price to $119.99 from the previous $109.99.

The community's reaction has been swift, with many expressing frustration over the steep price of a Joy-Con 2 Pair, which now hovers just below $100. The increased costs have left potential buyers puzzled and reconsidering their purchase plans.

Despite the grumbling about prices, there's a silver lining: many Nintendo Switch 1 accessories will remain compatible with the Switch 2. According to Nintendo's support site, original Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch 1 Pro controller can still be used, albeit wirelessly. While the original Joy-Cons cannot be directly attached to the Switch 2, they can be paired via Bluetooth. Additionally, retro controllers like those for the Super Nintendo and N64 will continue to work with compatible games.

Social media is abuzz with users discussing the compatibility of Switch 1 accessories and even exploring third-party controller options. While these alternatives might not offer all the features of the new Switch 2 controllers, such as the C-button or console wake-up functionality, they could be a cost-saving measure for some buyers.

Nintendo has also cautioned that future price adjustments for any of its products are possible, depending on market conditions. This provides some reassurance for those who might find the current prices steep, knowing they can still utilize their existing Pro controllers on the Switch 2.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will commence on April 24, 2025. As the launch date approaches, it will be interesting to see how these pricing changes influence consumer behavior and overall sales.
