Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cartridge Unveiled

Nintendo has unveiled our first detailed look at Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridges ahead of the console's release next month.

A new video from the company's Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carrying case, featuring slots to securely store up to six cartridges from both Switch generations.

As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions as Switch 1 cartridges—ensuring backward compatibility through a single cartridge slot. The key distinction lies in their color scheme.

Switch 2 cartridges feature a universal red design, not limited to the Mario Kart World edition shown in Nintendo's promotional footage. (For those without the Nintendo Today app, OatmealDome's X/Twitter post below offers an alternative view.)

The cartridge labels now display a Switch 2 logo instead of the original Nintendo Switch branding.

Beyond these changes, the cartridges remain functionally identical—including the bitter coating Nintendo applies to prevent accidental ingestion.

"We've prioritized safety by ensuring the unpleasant taste instantly discourages mouthing the cartridges," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta explained to GameSpot.

The Switch 2 launches worldwide on June 5, 2025. Recent reports indicate manufacturer Samsung is already planning hardware revisions, including potential OLED screen upgrades.
