"Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Unveiled by Super Smash Bros. Creator, Fans Excited for New Game"

by Grace Jun 17,2025

Masahiro Sakurai, the legendary creator of *Super Smash Bros.*, recently re-shared the official Nintendo Switch 2 Direct announcement with a single enthusiastic “Ooh!”—and fans are buzzing with speculation that this could hint at a new installment in the iconic fighting franchise.

As reported by Automaton, Sakurai reposted the Japanese version of Nintendo’s announcement confirming the full reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2. His playful reaction, while seemingly spontaneous, has sparked excitement among longtime followers who hope it signals the arrival of a next-gen *Super Smash Bros.* title.

While the post alone isn’t definitive proof, there have been subtle signs suggesting Sakurai may be preparing for another major reveal. Back in 2022, he launched his own YouTube channel and later shut it down with the cryptic promise that he wasn’t done making games. His final video teased that he was working on a new project—one that might surface “sooner or later.”

Of course, no official word has been given about a new *Super Smash Bros.* game. In fact, Sakurai himself once questioned how the series could possibly evolve beyond *Ultimate*, which already features an expansive roster including third-party icons like Sephiroth (*Final Fantasy VII*), Sora (*Kingdom Hearts*), Joker (*Persona 5*), and even Steve and Alex from *Minecraft*.

Still, considering the massive success of *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*—which has sold over 35.88 million copies to date—and Nintendo’s long-standing tradition of launching a new *Smash* title with each console generation since 1999, it seems increasingly likely we’ll see a new entry arrive alongside the Nintendo Switch 2.
