"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Gains Traction"

by Zoe Apr 13,2025

After the exciting reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 this morning, the buzz around the potential of using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse is gaining traction. In the reveal trailer, there's a striking scene where a pair of detached Joy-Cons are shown being placed onto a surface, attachment side down. They connect to a pair of connectors with seemingly flat bottoms and then glide smoothly across the surface, reminiscent of a mouse on a mouse pad. A closer look even reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one of the connectors, adding weight to the speculation.

Rumors had been swirling ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, suggesting that this functionality might be enabled by a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to those found in computer mice. However, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these rumors or detail what this feature might entail. Enthusiasts are speculating that this could enhance gameplay in titles like Civilization, which are traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. Others believe that, given Nintendo's innovative approach, this feature could introduce unique gameplay mechanics in their first-party titles. The possibilities are still up in the air.

While we await more details on potential mouse support for the Switch 2, along with the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, there's plenty we do know. The console, dubbed the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to launch in 2025. It will feature backward compatibility with the original Switch, and a new Mario Kart game is in development for it. More information about the upcoming software lineup will be shared during a Direct in April. For comprehensive coverage on the Nintendo Switch 2, you can follow our dedicated section.
