Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Shows Rotatable Joy-Cons

Nintendo has recently filed a patent that hints at an innovative feature for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 - the ability to attach Joy-Con controllers upside down.

As reported by VGC, the patent indicates the next-generation console will incorporate motion-sensitive gyro mechanics similar to smartphones' orientation capabilities. This means the display would automatically adjust its orientation regardless of how players hold the device.

The new Joy-Con design appears to support this functionality through magnetic attachment rather than the original Switch's rail system. This allows for more versatile controller placement options while maintaining secure connectivity.

This improved flexibility won't significantly impact hardware performance, but offers personalized control customization. Players could potentially position buttons, headphone jacks and other features according to their preferences, potentially enabling unique gameplay innovations if implemented.

The patent states: "Users can operate the game system by attaching controllers to either side of the main unit in various orientations. The system accommodates inverted positioning where the audio jack's placement reverses accordingly, allowing comfortable headphone connection regardless of device orientation."

If this functionality makes it to the final product, Nintendo will likely showcase it during their upcoming April 2nd Nintendo Direct presentation at 6am PT/9am ET/2pm UK time.

The Switch 2 launch appears imminent, with industry speculation pointing to a late summer release between June and September. This timeline aligns with ongoing hands-on demo events and third-party publisher Nacon's statement about a pre-September launch window.

Nintendo first teased the Switch 2 earlier this year with a trailer confirming backwards compatibility and an additional USB-C port.
