Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

by Scarlett Apr 20,2025

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be in high demand. To ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts can secure their pre-orders, Nintendo has introduced a pre-order system on the official My Nintendo Store. If you're interested in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 and select accessories, you can register your interest through your Nintendo Account. Once your turn arrives, you'll receive an invitation email, which remains valid for 72 hours.

There's a catch, though: to qualify for this priority, you must have been an active user of your existing Switch and a member of Nintendo Switch Online. Specifically, as of April 2, 2025, you need to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership with at least 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours. The invitations are non-transferable and will be sent to the email linked to your Nintendo Account. Additionally, there's a one-per-account limit on the system and each accessory during this period. You can express interest in either a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

After placing an order, it will be shipped with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of purchase. However, Nintendo clarifies that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipping times. These measures are designed to prioritize genuine fans and deter scalpers who might resell the console at a higher price.

The issue of scalping has plagued numerous product launches, including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and even the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve implemented a successful queue system for the Steam Deck, which linked purchases to Steam accounts and checked account creation dates. Nintendo's approach with the My Nintendo Store is similarly aimed at ensuring that long-time Switch users can secure their new console without facing the chaos typically associated with high-demand product launches.

While this pre-order system is one way to get your hands on the Nintendo Switch 2, other options will likely be available. However, this method offers a promising avenue for dedicated Switch fans to avoid the potential frenzy of securing a launch day pre-order.
