Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Delays Pre-Orders in Canada

by Natalie Apr 11,2025

Gamers were hit with a wave of disappointment last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an uncertain future. This change came in the wake of import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which caused financial markets to spiral. The ripple effect has crossed borders, with Nintendo Canada also confirming delays in pre-orders. So, if you were planning to secure a console through a relative in Winnipeg, you'll need to put those plans on hold.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada to the Canadian tech site MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged.

With the original pre-order launch date of April 9 looming, there's still no clarity on when eager fans can start their pre-order attempts. This uncertainty leaves gamers in limbo, especially with concerns about a potential price increase from the initially announced $449.99.

In other regions, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have already begun in the UK, with smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths selling out quickly. Scalpers have jumped on the opportunity, listing pre-orders on eBay for £500 ($639) or more, significantly higher than the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
