Nintendo Switch 2's C Button: A Quirky Feature Revealed [UPDATE]

by Lucas May 24,2025

Updated on January 14: The original version of this article linked to a different Discord server, also called "Nintendo Switch 2." The link has been changed to reflect the real source of the datamining effort. The original story is as follows.

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2's rumored C button may be used for chat functionality.
  • Recent datamining efforts suggest the Switch 2 will support a group and voice chat feature code-named Campus.
  • The next Nintendo console will reportedly be officially revealed on January 16.

The C button rumored to be featured on the Nintendo Switch 2 might be dedicated to chat-related functions, according to a recent report. This insight could provide clarity on one of the most enigmatic aspects of Nintendo's upcoming console.

Since late 2024, leaks about the Switch 2 have been rampant, attributed to the console's entry into mass production. These leaks consistently showcase an additional button on the console, marked with a dark gray "C" and located on the right Joy-Con, just below the home button. However, until now, the purpose of this button remained a mystery.

New theories about the C button have surfaced thanks to datamining efforts on the latest Switch OS. A report from a burgeoning Discord server focused on the Switch 2 reveals that Nintendo's recent firmware includes references to a feature code-named "Campus." This feature is believed to offer group and voice chat support for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.

The same source also hints that Campus will enable screen sharing and allow chat groups to include up to 12 users. While the feature's codename begins with a "C," it's speculated that if it's related to the new button, the "C" likely stands for "chat" rather than "Campus." This development contradicts the popular fan theory suggesting the C button could be used for casting the Switch 2's screen to other devices.

Chat Support Isn't Exactly in Line With the Switch's Kid-Friendly Design

Given that group and voice chats require an internet connection, if the Switch 2 does include these features, they might be exclusive to NSO subscribers. However, this remains uncertain, as the original Switch deliberately moved away from such functionalities to maintain a kid-friendly environment. Reintroducing chat features like those found in the Miiverse could pose challenges that Nintendo might prefer to avoid.

The true purpose of the C button, if it exists, may soon be revealed. According to multiple sources, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set for an official announcement on Thursday, January 16.
