Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the widespread adoption by game developers remains uncertain, this aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a rich source of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, yielded a new discovery in early January 2025. LiC found references to polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at potential mouse-like capabilities for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers aren't found in public component databases, suggesting they are unreleased products. The data indicates both tapes are 90 x 90mm squares, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While novel for Nintendo, mouse controller modes aren't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this feature on its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider to enhance surface movement.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities might offer a preview of Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
