Nintendo Switch Firmware 20.0.0: Icon Redesign, System Transfer to Switch 2, and More
Nintendo has rolled out a major firmware update for the Nintendo Switch, Version 20.0.0, just weeks ahead of the expected launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. The update introduces several new features and system-level changes aimed at streamlining the transition to the next-generation console.
System Transfer Feature Added for Nintendo Switch 2
One of the most significant additions in this update is the “System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2” option now available under System Settings. This feature enables users to transfer data from their original Nintendo Switch to the upcoming Switch 2 via local wireless communication. It’s a seamless way to carry over save files, digital games, and user accounts to the new system.
For those who may no longer have access to their original Switch after upgrading—such as those trading it in or selling it—Nintendo has included an alternative method. Users can upload their system transfer data to a dedicated server, which can later be retrieved on the Switch 2. However, once this upload is completed, the original Switch will be reset to factory settings. Nintendo advises users to proceed with caution and only perform this step if they’re certain they’ll be able to complete the transfer on their new Switch 2.
Users planning to keep their original Switch until after receiving the new model are recommended to wait and perform the system transfer locally once they have the Switch 2 ready. Both methods require an internet connection and a linked Nintendo Account.
Icon Design Updates Reflect Upcoming Switch 2
The update also brings visual changes to various icons across the HOME Menu, hinting at deeper integrations with the Switch 2. Notably, Donkey Kong’s user icon now reflects the updated design seen in upcoming Switch 2-exclusive titles like *Donkey Kong Bananza* and *Mario Kart World*. Other redesigned icons include those for Virtual Game Cards and GameShare, both of which are tied to features launching alongside the new console.
New Features Introduced in Firmware Update 20.0.0
- Virtual Game Card: Digital purchases—including games, DLC, and select free titles—are now represented as virtual game cards. Users can load and eject these between up to two Switch systems and even share them within the same Nintendo Account family group.
- GameShare: Allows compatible titles to be shared from a Switch 2 to nearby systems via local wireless communication. The Switch 2 must initiate the sharing session, and this feature is not supported between older Switch models.
- User-Verification Settings: Located under User > User Settings, this allows you to restrict access to the Virtual Game Card menu by requiring a PIN or sign-in to your Nintendo Account.
- Online License Settings: When enabled, you can play downloaded software or DLC without having the virtual game card loaded, provided the system is online.
- Updated Icons: The HOME Menu icons for the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News have been refreshed for better visual clarity.
- Save Data Transfer Enhancements: Multiple save files can now be selected and transferred simultaneously through the “Transfer Your Save Data” menu.
Important Notes About Compatibility and Terminology
With the introduction of Virtual Game Cards, the term “Primary Console” has been phased out. Instead, Nintendo now refers to the “Pass-enabled console,” which determines where certain subscriptions or software passes can be accessed by all users on that system. For more information, visit the official Nintendo support page on setting or changing your Pass-enabled console.
This firmware update marks a pivotal shift in how users interact with digital content and prepares current Switch owners for a smoother migration path to the Switch 2 when it launches this summer.
Preorder Availability and Launch Expectations
As anticipation builds, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders officially launched on April 24, 2025, priced at $449.99. Despite high global demand, availability has been limited, prompting many fans to hold off until closer to the June 5 release date.
Additionally, Nintendo issued a notice to U.S. customers who preordered through the My Nintendo Store, warning that delivery by the launch date cannot be guaranteed due to overwhelming preorder volumes.
