Nexon, Blizzard Partner on Overwatch Mobile

Overwatch Mobile Might Still Happen as Nexon Signs New Agreement with Blizzard

The core focus of the deal involves publishing and development rights for StarCraft

But reports also suggest a possible MOBA-style Overwatch spinoff/sequel

An Overwatch mobile adaptation has long seemed unlikely, especially after journalist Jason Schreier's exposé on Blizzard revealed such plans had been shelved. However, a new partnership between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard might revive these prospects.

The primary purpose of the agreement centers on publishing and developing new installments in the legendary StarCraft RTS franchise. Rival companies like Krafton and Netmarble had reportedly shown interest, but Nexon appears to have secured the rights.

More surprising are claims that the deal also includes mobile publishing rights for Overwatch, suggesting the project isn't canceled after all. Reports indicate this could become an official MOBA-style sequel rather than a direct port.

A New Direction for Overwatch?

This wouldn't mark Overwatch's first foray into the MOBA genre - Blizzard previously featured the franchise prominently in Heroes of the Storm. A mobile version of Heroes featuring Overwatch characters remains a possibility.

Alternatively, we might see a completely new MOBA spinoff. However, expectations of an "Overwatch 3" seem unrealistic, as the series has traditionally focused on PC and console platforms.

Embracing its MOBA influences could potentially benefit Overwatch, especially with new competitors like Marvel Rivals entering the arena. This partnership might represent Blizzard's strategy for revitalizing the franchise through new mobile experiences.
