Palworld Creator Unveils Unexpected Switch Game Amidst Legal Dispute
Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo eShop Launch Amidst Legal Battle
Pocketpair, the developer embroiled in a legal dispute with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action-card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch release. The launch, announced without prior warning, coincides with a 50% discount running until January 24th.
The release comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings stemming from accusations of patent infringement against Pocketpair's popular game, Palworld. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed suit in September 2024, alleging that Palworld's "Pal Spheres" infringed upon Pokémon's creature-capturing system patents. Despite this, Palworld received a major update in December, and now OverDungeon makes its Nintendo Switch debut. The strategic decision to release OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, has fueled speculation online, with some suggesting it's a calculated response to the ongoing lawsuit.
This isn't Pocketpair's first brush with comparisons to Nintendo titles. Their 2020 RPG, Craftopia, drew significant comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite the legal challenges, Pocketpair continues to support both Craftopia and Palworld, with the latter recently announcing a collaboration with Terraria, including a new Pal and further content planned for 2025. Furthermore, future plans for Palworld include a Mac port and a potential mobile release.
The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains ongoing, with some legal experts predicting a protracted legal process if a settlement isn't reached. The release of OverDungeon adds another layer of complexity to this unfolding situation within the gaming industry.
