If you’re a gamer, you've likely encountered the challenges of playing vertical arcade games on your phone. The experience often feels clunky and unsatisfying. Enter Max Kern, a modder who has developed a new Tate mode mini controller to address this very issue. But the big question remains: does it truly solve the problem?

Traditional controllers are primarily designed for landscape mode, similar to those used on devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, classic vertical shooters and retro games require a different grip, akin to scrolling through Instagram.

Max Kern has innovatively tackled this challenge with his tiny USB-C gamepad, specifically engineered for portrait-mode or Tate mode gaming. The controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.

The construction of the Tate Mode mini controller involves a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. Max has generously shared a tutorial on his YouTube channel, enabling enthusiasts to replicate the project.

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac, showcasing its versatility despite its small size.

However, there are concerns about the strain it might place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight. This setup requires you to hold both the phone and the controller to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.

On Reddit, opinions are divided. Some users express admiration for the ingenuity, while others worry about potential hand cramps and overall comfort. It’s worth noting that this is more of a DIY project than a commercial product, with Max making all the necessary firmware and print files available on Thingiverse and GitHub.
