PlayStation 30th Anniversary Trailer Reignites "Bloodborne Remake" Speculation
Renewed Bloodborne Speculation Following PlayStation's 30th Anniversary Celebration
The inclusion of Bloodborne in PlayStation's 30th-anniversary trailer has reignited speculation about a potential remake or sequel. The trailer, featuring a montage of iconic PlayStation games, used the phrase "It's about persistence" alongside the Bloodborne footage, fueling fan excitement.
The anniversary trailer, set to a cover of The Cranberries' "Dreams," showcased titles like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Helldivers 2, each with a thematic caption. Bloodborne's placement and caption, however, sparked intense online discussion, with many interpreting it as a strong hint towards future developments. This isn't the first time such speculation has arisen; a previous Instagram post by PlayStation Italia featuring Bloodborne imagery also generated considerable buzz.
While the "persistence" caption could simply highlight the game's notorious difficulty, the timing and context have led many to believe a Bloodborne 2 or a remastered version with enhanced graphics and 60fps is imminent.
PS5 Update: Customizable UI and a Blast from the Past
Sony's 30th-anniversary celebrations also included a PS5 update offering a limited-time PS1 boot-up sequence and customizable themes inspired by past PlayStation consoles. Users can now personalize their home screen's appearance and sound effects, choosing from various console eras.
This update has been well-received, particularly the option to revert to the PS4 UI. However, the limited-time nature of the update has disappointed some, leading to speculation that this could be a test run for more extensive UI customization options on the PS5 in the future.
Sony's Handheld Ambitions
Adding to the wave of speculation, Digital Foundry recently corroborated Bloomberg's report about Sony developing a handheld console for PS5 games. While still in early stages, this move suggests Sony's intention to compete in the portable gaming market currently dominated by Nintendo Switch.
This strategic move by both Sony and Microsoft is seen as a logical response to the growing popularity of mobile gaming, allowing their handheld devices to complement the mobile gaming experience. While Microsoft has been more open about its handheld plans, Sony remains tight-lipped. The development and release of both companies' handheld consoles are likely years away, requiring significant investment to create affordable yet graphically superior devices to challenge Nintendo's dominance.
In contrast to Sony and Microsoft's ongoing development, Nintendo appears further along in its plans. Nintendo's president announced on Twitter (X) in May 2024 that more information about the Nintendo Switch's successor would be revealed within the current fiscal year.
