Ghost of Yōtei Gameplay Revealed in PlayStation State of Play

by Sarah Dec 07,2025

Sony has announced it will host a PlayStation State of Play broadcast this week, featuring an in-depth look at Ghost of Yōtei's gameplay.

The upcoming 20-minute presentation will focus on the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, airing this Thursday, July 10 at 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern Time. For European viewers, the broadcast begins at 11pm CEST or 10pm BST.

Sucker Punch creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox will introduce the gameplay showcase.

Ghost of Yōtei received only a brief mention during Sony's main PlayStation Showcase last month, though the company promised a dedicated deep dive in July ahead of the game's October release.

PlayStation's description of this State of Play teases more details about protagonist Atsu's quest for vengeance, a showcase of her arsenal, plus "new ways to personalize your journey across Japan's frontier, new special modes, and much more."

Sucker Punch announced its Ghost of Tsushima sequel last September, confirming a new protagonist embarking on a familiar bloody journey through 17th-century Japan.

"Sixteen years ago in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), a gang of outlaws called the Yōtei Six took everything from Atsu," explained Sucker Punch senior communications manager Andrew Goldfarb. "They murdered her family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree outside her home. But Atsu survived. She learned to fight, kill, and hunt. After years away, she has returned with a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito.

"One by one, she hunts them down to avenge her family, wielding the very katana that pinned her to that burning tree years ago. While Atsu's story begins with vengeance, her journey will reveal purposes beyond revenge. As she explores Ezo, Atsu will form unexpected alliances and build connections that grant her a new sense of meaning."

This year has seen several major open-world games set in Japan featuring protagonists on vengeful quests against cryptic targets. Ghost of Yōtei arrives just six months after Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows, which is scheduled to receive a significant DLC expansion before 2025 concludes.
