PlayStation Productions dominated the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 on January 7th, announcing several new game adaptations.

Leading the charge is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new anime series from Crunchyroll and Aniplex, set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Takanobu Mizumo will direct, with Gen Urobuchi handling story composition. Sony Music will contribute the music and soundtrack.

Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, and Ashley Brucks, President of Screen Gems, revealed that films based on Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (handled by Columbia Pictures) are in development. Details remain scarce for both projects. They followed this announcement with a teaser for the Until Dawn film adaptation, set for release on April 25, 2025.

Neil Druckmann then took the stage, briefly discussing Naughty Dog's upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, before unveiling a new trailer for The Last of Us season two. This season will adapt the storyline from The Last of Us Part II, introducing new characters like Abby and Dina.

With numerous projects underway, PlayStation Productions is significantly expanding its reach into video game adaptations. The success of these ventures could pave the way for even more beloved franchises to receive similar treatment.

PlayStation Productions’ Previous Adaptations

This isn't PlayStation's first foray into video game adaptations. Early examples include the Resident Evil film series (starting in 2002), and the 2006 Silent Hill film. While fan reception for these adaptations was mixed, they were commercially successful.

PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, aims to adapt PlayStation-exclusive titles. Its notable successes include Uncharted (2022), starring Tom Holland, and the Gran Turismo film (2023), both of which performed well at the box office.

The Twisted Metal series, released on Peacock in 2023, is another example. While not as critically acclaimed as The Last of Us, the post-apocalyptic action-comedy completed production on its second season in late 2024, though a release date is yet to be announced.

Beyond the CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions is also developing films based on Days Gone, a sequel to the Uncharted film, and a God of War television series, though details remain limited.

Given PlayStation Productions' current trajectory and the popularity of many PlayStation franchises, it's highly likely we'll see more beloved games adapted for film and television in the future.
