Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again

by Zoe Apr 17,2025

The latest addition to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals, was fully unveiled on March 24 and is set to launch starting on May 30, 2025. As expected, pre-orders have kicked off amidst a tumultuous launch window, with scalpers and store issues already creating significant challenges for collectors.

Destined Rivals is highly anticipated for a few key reasons. It brings back the beloved Trainer's Pokémon cards, a nostalgic nod to classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards integrate fan-favorite Trainers with their Pokémon in unique ways, adding depth to the game's lore. Furthermore, the set revolves around Team Rocket, the iconic villainous team from the first generation of Pokémon, promising a thematic depth that collectors adore.

When pre-orders opened, fans faced significant hurdles accessing the Pokémon Center website, particularly those eager to secure the Elite Trainer Box (ETB). This themed box, packed with card packs and other collectibles, is a popular choice for enthusiasts diving into a new set. Unfortunately, many were left frustrated as they couldn't navigate the website's traffic.

As anticipated, scalpers swiftly jumped on the opportunity, listing pre-ordered ETBs on sites like eBay at exorbitant prices, often several hundred dollars above the standard $54.99 price tag. This practice was met with widespread criticism, as highlighted by Serebii's Joe Merrick, who expressed his disgust at the financialization of the Pokémon TCG. "I truly hate this," Merrick stated. "The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."

This situation is unfortunately not unique to Destined Rivals. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced similar issues with shortages and rapid sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has responded by promising more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB later in the year, according to a FAQ shared by PokéBeach.

Adding to the frustration, some buyers have reported their ETB orders being cancelled despite the high demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG. While the digital platform Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a virtual alternative, many fans prefer the tangible experience of physical cards. Visiting local stores to find packs has become increasingly challenging, underscoring the widespread impact of these supply issues.

These exciting set releases have unfortunately been overshadowed by logistical and ethical concerns. It's hoped that solutions will be implemented soon to restore the joy of collecting and playing the Pokémon TCG.
